ANTILIPIDEMIC AND ANTIDIABETIC EFFECTS OF RED BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.) EXTRACT ON GLUT4 EXPRESSION IN TYPE 2 DIABETIC RATS
Abstract
Diabetic dyslipidemia can worsen insulin resistance and increase the risk of complications. Medicinal plants, such as red beans, are potential alternatives due to their bioactive compounds, including melatonin, which is known to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of red bean extract on lipid profile and GLUT4 expression in diabetic rats. This experimental study used male Wistar rats divided into five groups: KN (healthy rats), K– (diabetic rats), K+ (diabetic rats + Metformin), P1 (diabetic rats + red bean extract dose 1), and P2 (diabetic rats + red bean extract dose 2). Treatments were administered for 21 days. Lipid profile levels and GLUT4 expression were measured quantitatively, and Pearson correlation was performed with significance set at p ≤ 0.05. Results showed that rats in P2 have a significantly lower cholesterol levels compared to K- (p<0,05). Furthermore, GLUT4 expression was significantly upregulated in the P2 group compared to the K-. Pearson correlation analysis showed no significant relationship between GLUT-4 expression and lipid parameters (p>0,05). In conclusion, higher dose of red beans extract could improve lipid profiles and restore GLUT-4 expression in diabetic rats effectively. This finding suggest that the extract improves metabolic parameters through multiple pathways rather than a single linear mechanism dependent on lipid-GLUT4 correlation.
