NEPHROLEPIS BISERRATA EXTRACTS MITIGATE OXIDATIVE STRESS AND INFLAMMATORY CYTOKINES: A POTENTIAL THERAPY FOR CARBON TETRACHLORIDE-INDUCED HEPATIC DAMAGE IN RATS

Abstract

Hepatic damage is largely driven by inflammation and oxidative stress, making liver diseases a significant global health issue. The fern Nephrolepis biserrata, from the Nephrolepidaceae family, is known for its medicinal properties. Previous studies have highlighted its antioxidative and hepatoprotective effects. This study investigates the hepatoprotective effects of N. biserrata methanol extract against carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄)-induced liver damage in rats. After receiving N. biserrata extract for 14 days, the rats received two doses of CCl₄. Hepatoprotective effects were evaluated by measuring oxidative stress markers, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and hepatic ultrastructure. CCl₄ administration increased oxidative stress markers (HNE, 8-OHdG) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, PGE2). Treatment with N. biserrata extract reduced these markers, and ultrastructural analysis revealed dose-dependent recovery of liver cell integrity. These findings suggest that N. biserrata extract may protect against oxidative stress and inflammation in liver damage.
